Jay Onrait wanted to meet at a bar near his home in Kensington Market, on a patio where he had already hosted a procession of farewell gatherings with friends, some of whom he had not seen in years. Tucked deep in the heart of Toronto’s most eclectic neighbourhood, the bar was a squat, one-storey building with a corrugated metal façade and ashtrays that had been emptied, but perhaps never cleaned.
